Thefts from construction sites are becoming more common in Florida. That's according to Martin County Sheriff William Snyder.

“We’ve had 12 reported incidents of significant construction site theft this year so far. I would say that is the tip of the iceberg.”

He tells CBS 12 News that crooks know that “One of the real challenges is just how hard it is to prevent these thieves because you can’t take your construction material home with you at the end of the day. You have to leave it at the construction site.”

The latest incident of construction site theft in Martin County happened on Sunday. Two illegal immigrants from Nicaragua were arrested after allegedly stealing a van full of $3,000 worth of roofing materials.

Snyder says they had driven up from Palm Beach County to commit the crime.

The men face grand theft and burglary charges and are on ICE holds because of their status in the country.
