MARTINSBURG, W.Va. ( DC News Now ) — The West Virginia Air National Guard invited high school students to spend a summer afternoon at the 167th base hanger to get a sneak peek into the work of airmen while engaging in a little athletic competition.

Competitive events like tug-of-war and tractor pulls were a way to showcase the Guard and bring the region and community together.

“It’s summer time and school is out right now,” said Martin Timko, Commander of the 167th Air Wing. “All these kids have smiles on their faces and little sway bags and it’s the local community that did that for them.”

Students were treated to a tour of the Guard’s C-17 Globemaster aircraft and given prizes for their competitive success.
