MARTINSBURG, W.Va. ( DC News Now ) — West Virginia farmers are facing challenges from this summer drought.

The state’s Department of Agriculture said rainfall averages across West Virginia are about four-and-a-half inches below average, leading Gov. Jim Justice to declare a state of emergency because of the persistent dry conditions.

Growers at the popular Orr’s Farm Market and Orchard in Martinsburg said they are working overtime to save their fields.

“It’s been about eight weeks of really dry weather here,” said Katy Orr-Dove at Orr’s. “A lot of storms seem to be going east or west or north or south of here. We finally did get some rain last night which was lifesaving for some of our crops.”

More rainfall is predicted for the eastern panhandle of West Virginia this week.
