Maryland woman in shock after big lottery win after breaking routine, playing different game

A Maryland woman who has been casually playing the Mega Millions, Powerball and Multi-Match lottery games decided to try something new one day — and it netted her over $31,000 .

The shocked woman is now at a loss after winning more money than she's ever won before, she told the Maryland Lottery . The game that garnered her the big prize? A Racetrax Trifecta bet in which the woman placed bets on six horse races at a track in Riverdale Park, a small, semi-urban town just north of Washington, D.C.

She had reportedly been out with friends for the July 4 holiday shortly after the actual day. She and her friends went to the Town Center Market in the town, where they enjoyed food, drinks and fun, she told the Maryland Lottery.

At one point, she decided to play some games, but she told the organization, "I wanted to try something different." So, the single mother of two picked out the Racetrax game from the lottery's machine in the market, paying $6 on a Trifecta bet for horses 12, 10 and 11 to cross the finish line in exactly that order.

The horses did, and she won. But she didn't even notice at the time, as she had gone back to the table where she sat with her friends and wasn't paying attention to the actual game.

"My friends urged me to check my ticket, so I went to the scanner," she told the lottery, a smile lighting up her face. "I was shocked when I saw the amount because I had never won that amount of money ever."

She returned to the table and shared the news with her friends, who were all ecstatic for her. She said she immediately bought everyone at the table a round of drinks. The prize was worth exactly $31,233.

Earlier this week, the resident of Silver Springs in Montgomery County, which is just six miles northwest of Riverdale Park and right along Maryland's border with Washington, came into the Maryland Lottery's headquarters in Baltimore to claim her prize.

She reportedly told officials that she plans to use some of the winnings to help pay for her son's college tuition. She'll also use some to update her home, she said.

The market that sold the ticket to the woman, which is located at 4705 Queensbury Road, is slated to receive a $312.33 bonus from the lottery for selling the ticket, which was worth a prize of $10,000 or more. The bonus is exactly 10% of the woman's winnings.
