A Maryland woman has been sentenced to 61 years in prison after she murdered and dismembered her boyfriend.

Michelina Desiree Goodwin, 46, was convicted of second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and the unauthorized disposal of a body after an eight-day trial where a St. Mary’s County jury found her guilty. Goodwin had the maximum sentence possible handed down to her by the judge for brutally murdering James Volodimir Nalborczyk, 50.

State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling said in a statement: “The defendant’s heinous act of shooting the victim in the back pales in comparison to the gruesome details following the murder. After killing the victim, the defendant dismembered him, and scattered his remains throughout our county and a neighboring county.”

Nalborczyk was reported missing by his family to Maryland State Police on Dec. 21, 2022. Investigating officers determined that foul play was involved in his disappearance after he hadn’t been seen or heard from in 10 days.

Troopers investigating what had happened to him then found his body parts scattered in St. Mary’s County and nearby Charles County. Police then arrested Goodwin under suspicion of murder, with Larry Murphy, 42, also arrested in mid-January 2023 for murder and accessory after the fact.

A probable cause arrest affidavit obtained by Southern Maryland News outlines how Goodwin told Nalborczyk’s family she had last seen him in December 2022 and had been planning on breaking up with him when he left for Virginia in a company Vehicle. However, she later changed her story telling law enforcement officers that the pair had been arguing and she pointed a gun at him which went off and hit him in the back killing him.

She claimed that she then got Murphy to help her chop up Nalborczyk’s body and dispose of the parts. While Murphy denied his involvement, he was indicted for accessory after the fact and found guilty by a jury and subsequently sentenced to one year in jail.

Sterling added: “My hope is that with the outcome of today’s sentencing hearing, the victim’s family can finally find peace, justice, healing, and closure after the horrifying homicide of their beloved family member." Nalborczyk’s obituary paid tribute to him and outlined his years spent working as a HVAC technician.

It said: “The last few years Jimmy has worked odd jobs helping everyone around him and is remembered by many working at the St. Mary’s farmer’s market. He never stopped working and trying to help others. Jimmy will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.”
