I really enjoyed it but the political and ideological subtexts to the movie pissed me off. The director said the deaths of the foreigners was a commentary on Swedens (the country that opened their doors more than any other country in Europe to Syrian refugees) return to the xenophobia that was supposedly an aspect of their medieval heritage. The movie ended up saying far more about ideology and politics than the director intended imo.

The first 20 minutes set up the fact that Dani is completely alone in the world. Her family is gone, her boyfriend is distant and she really has nobody else to rely on. The cult is the family that she longed for and for the first time, she finally belongs. The entire rest of the movie serves as a solution to the problem the first 20 minutes set up. The first 20 minutes is absolutely integral to the finale of this film. Not sure how you thought it was random and never addressed as it's the whole point of the movie.

As I former cult member myself (4 years) I would say that there is A LOT lacking in many movies featuring cults. I would like to see a movie that that really captures the extent of indoctrination and makes it as visceral as it really is. They make you feel special, loved and Whole and you would be willing to do anything for Them. They become your life and you are just a part of Them; your self has no value other than in that context.
