MARYSVALE, Utah ( ABC4 ) — The Silver King fire that has been raging just three miles west of Marysvale, Utah in the Fishlake National Forest had “no significant growth” on Sunday, July 14, according to the Central Utah Fire Interagency.

The lightning-sparked flames have been burning since early July and have since spread to nearly 18,000 acres as of Monday, July 15. Fire crews report the fire is just 8% contained – an improvement from the 2% reported on Saturday .

Marysvale residents face risk of ‘major flooding’ due to Silver King Fire, officials say

The fire is reportedly showing “moderate behavior” as fire crews continue to work to suppress the flames and prevent further spreading. The northwest area closest to the historic Silver King Mine and the eastern edge of the flame closest to Marysvale has been contained, according to a map provided by the interagency.

The Central Utah Fire Interagency said hotshot crews and firefighters have been working to cut vegetation and create containment lines around the perimeter of the fire to slow its spread. Crews have also been reducing the fuel around the areas of historic buildings in an attempt to save the structures.

The hot, dry, and windy conditions have so far aided the fire and, despite a brief break in the weather, officials are expecting harsher weather conditions as the week goes on.

“No measurable precipitation fell over the fire area yesterday afternoon,” the Central Utah Fire Interagency said in a statement. “Nearby thunder cells produced some outflow winds. Temperatures moderated on Sunday and a drying trend is expected to begin Monday and continue through the coming week. There is a chance of thunderstorms and gusty winds through Monday.”

A large portion of Fishlake National Forest remains closed to the public for safety concerns and to allow fire crews to safely contain the flames. Stage 1 Fire Restrictions were also put into place in the region.

The Central Utah Fire Interagency said it has over 700 personnel working to battle the flames.
