    Maryville High School's Mara Johnson receives National Merit Scholarship

    Maryville High School senior Mara C. Johnson has received a National Merit Furman University Scholarship.

    The award provides between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.

    Johnson is among 2,900 Merit Scholar designees chosen from more than 15,000 finalists in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program. According to a news release, her probable career field is education.

    The Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, based not only on their academic records but also contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official.
