First responders from Gallia and Mason Counties teamed up for Independence Day
GALLIPOLIS, Ohio (WV News) — With Gallipolis hosting the River Recreation Festival and Point Pleasant hosting the Liberty Fest, the sheriff offices of Gallia and Mason Counties aimed to keep everyone safe in and around the Ohio River. This year, the agencies tried something different in the interests of public safety for the events during the Fourth of July week.
Marshall adding rural psychiatry program
HUNTINGTON — Marshall University has announced that 113 residents will enter the School of Medicine’s residency program next year alongside a new rural psychiatry program. Of the 113, four residents will be part of the new rural psychiatry program, which will help meet the needs of Mason County through a partnership with Rivers Health, said Paulette Wehner, vice dean for medical education at Marshall’s School of Medicine.

Kayaker hit, killed by barge on Ohio River in Mason County
HARTFORD, W.Va. — A man was hit and killed by a barge while kayaking Thursday afternoon on the Ohio River, according to the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources (WVDNR). The victim was identified as William Hayes, 51, of Middleport, Ohio.
Update: Kayaker dies in Ohio River
HARTFORD, W.Va. — A 51-year-old man kayaking on the Ohio River near the community of Hartford in Mason County died Thursday evening after being struck by a barge. Division of Natural Resources Police told MetroNews the man was struck at around 5:30 p.m. near Hoffman Park Drive. The victim died in the river.
