BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey appeared before the Governor's Council on Wednesday and introduced her Supreme Judicial Court nominee Gabrielle Wolohojian.

She is currently a Massachusetts Appeals Court Associate Justice and a former romantic partner of the governor.

Healey announced her nomination earlier this month which caused a mixed reaction.

At the confirmation hearing, the governor said her nomination to the court is 'ethically appropriate' and her personal history with Wolohijian did not influence the nomination.

Governor Healey also said Wolohojian is the best choice for the SJC because of her experience, abilities, and qualifications. "Judge Wolohojian is a remarkable jurist, uniquely talented, thoroughly prepared, and generously willing to serve," the governor said.

Others speaking out in support of Wolohojian included another appeals court justice and Wolohojian's judicial secretary.

Others have opposed the nomination, like the Massachusetts Republican Party , which wants Healey to withdraw the choice.

After the nomination was announced, MassGOP Chair Amy Carnevale said in a statement that the nomination was 'inappropriate.'

    WBZ's Kim Tunnicliffe (@KimWBZ) reports.
