Police arrest suspect in hit-and-run carnage in Bushwick
BUSHWICK — POLICE ARRESTED New Lots resident Robert Matthews, 26, suspected of running down two pedestrians in Bushwick on May 9 while fleeing arrest. Police allege Matthews was speeding in a 2024 Mazda at roughly 5 p.m. when he hit two pedestrians at the intersection of Eldert St. and Knickerbocker Ave., killing Juanita Vidal, 71, and leaving the other victim, a 44-year-old woman, in critical condition. According to NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad, a police car assigned to the 83 Precinct was attempting to stop the Mazda when it sped northbound, blasting through two stop signs and swerving left to avoid another vehicle when it hit the pedestrians and a parked van. Police say that Matthews fled on foot.
