    Canton Repository wins a general excellence award at 2023 Ohio APME journalism contest

    Canton Repository and Massillon Independent journalists won more than 20 awards in Ohio's most competitive journalism contest , with the Repository receiving a second place award in its division for general excellence.

    The 2023 Ohio Associated Press Media Editors competition awards were announced Sunday at Villa Milano in Columbus. The contest honors the best print and broadcast journalism throughout the state. The competition featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2023.

    The following staff members, in alphabetical order, were honored:

    • Tim Botos: Second place for best feature writer; and third place for best investigative reporting for his story on a how a baby who had been raped was sent home from the hospital with her abuser.
    • Tim Botos, Kelli Weir and Charita Goshay: First place for best digital project for assembling an online database of more than 1,200 Stark County military servicemen and women who died while serving in the military since World War I. The project appeared online on Memorial Day.
    • Steve Doerschuk: First place for best sports enterprise for his series looking at the best football team in Kent State University history ; second place for best sports writer; and third place for best sports columnist.
    • Ben Duer: First place for best video for his video with David Upshaw , a corrections officer at the Indian River Juvenile Correctional Facility in Massillon who was attacked.
    • Charita Goshay: Second place for best columnist.
    • Amy Knapp: First place for best news writer.
    • Nancy Molnar and Amy Knapp: First place for best spot news coverage for the stories on a Lake Township murder-suicide that took the lives of the Dunham family.
    • Julie Vennitti Botos: First place and second place for best photo story; first place and third place for best feature photo; second place for best sports photo; and second place for best photographer.
    • Robert Wang: Third place for best explanatory reporting for his behind the scenes look at the insults and accusations hurled in the Plain Township trustees race.
    • Kelli Weir: Third place for best news writer; second place for best enterprise reporting for her look at Norfolk Southern's safety record following the crash in East Palestine; and second place for best explanatory reporting for how Patriot Software responded to the Silicon Valley Bank collapse.
    • Josh Weir: Second place for best sports feature writer.
    • Kevin Whitlock: First place for best sports photo

    Former designer Samantha Wong won second place for the best full page design for "A flaw in the system."...

    The Repository competes in Division IV for Ohio newspapers among papers such as the Warren Tribune Chronicle, Findlay Courier, Lima News and Cleveland Plain Dealer. The Independent competes in Division I, the smallest among the divisions.

    Knapp and Duer also contributed to the statewide project "Chaos in Ohio's Youth Lockups." That project, which was submitted by the Cincinnati Enquirer and also included work by the Columbus Dispatch and Akron Beacon Journal, received second place for investigative reporting in Division V.

    Molnar also won first place for best news writer and first place for best investigative reporting in Division III for her work with the Times-Reporter in Tuscarawas County before joining the Repository as a staff writer.

    The Repository, Independent and Times-Reporter are owned by Gannett.
