Piedmont Region Faces Dangerous Heat Wave, Heat Advisory in Effect for Charlotte and Surrounding Areas
A sweltering heatwave is set to firmly grip the Piedmont region of Northeast Georgia, North Carolina and upstate South Carolina, with astronomical heat index values that could soar up to 108, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Residents in Charlotte and surrounding areas are under a heat advisory effective from 11 AM until 8 PM EDT today, as the mercury is expected to climb near the century mark, combining with high humidity to produce potentially dangerous conditions. The NWS cautions that hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses.

Pitt gripped in drought bullseye: Historically dry conditions raise concern
A dearth of April showers and less than half an inch of total recorded precipitation in June has made Pitt County a poster child for ongoing statewide drought conditions, an expert said. Rainfall totals in Pitt County from January-June are almost 7.82 inches below the norm, according to data provided by Corey Davis, assistant state climatologist for the North Carolina State Climate Office. A Record Dry June Accelerates Drought’s Arrival
Extreme heat hit home in June, with little rainfall throughout the month. That combination brought the rapid onset of drought conditions in North Carolina. A boost from a late-month heat wave helped put our June temperatures well above normal. The National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) reports a preliminary statewide average temperature of 75.4°F. That ranks as our 22nd-warmest June out of the past 130 years and the warmest since 2018.
