Kelli Todd, Executive Director of Volunteers for Youth Justice (VYJ), received the esteemed Don E. Wydra Memorial Award for Outstanding Contribution to Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention at the Louisiana Governor’s 43rd Annual Conference on Juvenile Justice. The award was presented during the event’s opening session at Sam’s Town Casino in Shreveport on August 21, 2024.

Historic live oaks cut down to build new business in Gonzales
GONZALES - For decades, two large Live Oak trees provided beauty and shade outside of a building along Airline Highway. In just one day, all of that history was erased. All that remains is a stump and a pile of debris outside of the now-abandoned Piccadilly Cafeteria in Gonzales. Residents of the area say the trees were a landmark and they are disappointed nothing was done to save the trees from destruction.

AP announces 3 new content collaborations with nonprofit newsrooms
The Associated Press today announced three new content sharing agreements with U.S. nonprofit news newsrooms: Deep South Today, The Maine Monitor and The Nevada Independent. The new content collaborations follow arrangements AP announced in May with CalMatters, Honolulu Civil Beat, Montana Free Press, Nebraska Journalism Trust and South Dakota News Watch, along with a content sharing arrangement between AP and The Texas Tribune announced in March.

Hometown Heroes - Sleep in Heavenly Peace
LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - A warm bed is one of those necessities that many take for granted. A group of volunteers is working to make sure kids have a proper place to sleep. “There’s a lot of children who don’t have beds to sleep in,” said Paul Warner, president of the Sulphur chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace. “We make beds out of raw lumber, buy bedding, mattresses, and give them to kids free of charge, so that they have a bed to sleep in.”
