"Try to stay positive." The lives of our homeless neighbors in downtown Wilmington
This reporting project was made possible by a grant from the Fourth Estate Fund. Nearly 1 million people experienced homelessness for the first time in 2023, according to the National Association to End Homelessness. Still more experienced it for a second, third, or fourth time. With a rising cost of living and high rents, more and more Americans are teetering on the edge. FORT LIBERTY — Nestled in the back room of the 18th Airborne Corps headquarters, Travis Bell’s barbershop walls are filled with photos and autographs. Aside from a photo of the late NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Sr., the photos aren’t of professional athletes, Hollywood actors and actresses or Grammy singers, but are of some of the nation’s top soldiers who have served at the former Fort Bragg, now Fort Liberty.
Bank employee arrested for Assault by Strangulation
On June 20, 2024, KPD officers responded to an assault report at Wells Fargo located at 1903 W Vernon Avenue. Upon arrival, they made contact with the victim, who stated that while she was waiting in line, a bank employee named Lucretia McMurtry (55, of Kinston) began yelling at her. The verbal altercation escalated when McMurtry grabbed the victim by the neck, shook her head uncontrollably, and began strangling her.

New Amazon facility opens in Fayetteville
The giant new Amazon Fulfillment Center near Fort Liberty is starting to show signs of life. Henrico Police arrest 18-year-old in connection with Eastern Henrico homicide
An 18-year-old Henrico man has been arrested and charged in connection to a June shooting that left a man dead in Eastern Henrico. Henrico Police took Damarcus Alexander Mason into custody July 19 and charged him with second-degree murder, armed robbery, and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with a June 16 shooting in the 4600 block of Grand Ledge Court that left 23-year-old Lamontae Aubrey Scott, 23, of Sandston dead.
