MCALLEN, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — The McAllen Police Department, the Texas Department of Transportation, and other Hidalgo County law enforcement will participate in Operation Slowdown.

The department’s news release said the goal of Operation Slowdown is to promote safe driving through education and enforcement efforts.

From Friday, July 19 through Sunday, Aug. 4, McAllen Police will have officers on regular and overtime status looking for drivers who are speeding and other traffic violations.

The campaign encourages drivers to make safer choices when behind the wheel, such as wearing seat belts, driving the speed limit, never texting and driving, and never driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the news release.

Operation Slowdown is part of TxDOT’s #BeSmartDriveSafe campaign, a key component of #EndTheStreakTX.
