Kershaw County families receive summer aid through Greg's Groceries initiative
CAMDEN, S.C. — Families in need getting a boost this summer in Kershaw County. It’s all thanks to an effort born out of tragedy almost a decade ago. The group Serve and Connect which was founded after Forest Acres Police officer Greg Alia was lost in the line of duty in 2015 has been making sure food is on the table through the Greg’s Groceries program.
Two men arrested in South Carolina charged in North Augusta arson investigation
Two men were arrested in Darlington, South Carolina on Thursday in connection to an alleged arson at Palmetto Place Apartments in North Augusta. Nelson Dwayne Locklair, 41, and Brian Keon Byrd, 30, are charged with arson in the second degree and were extradited back to Aiken County on Friday, according to a news release from the North Augusta Department of Public Safety. They are being held in the Doris C. Gravit Detention Center.

SCDOT Will Have Highway 1 Bridge Lane Closures This Weekend
SC DOT says the US 1 Bridge over the Wateree River will begin lane closures on Friday night July 12th at 7:00 pm and will continue to have lane closures during the day Saturday July 13th through Noon on Sunday July 14th. This work will consist of concrete patching on the bridge deck. SC DOT is hopeful that this will be the last of the daytime lane closures barring any unforeseen events or weather. There will continue to be night time closures and ongoing work.
KC School Board To Meet on July 16th
The Kershaw County School Board will meet on Tuesday July 16th at 6pm inside the back building of the district office in Camden. Items on the agenda include public forum, discussion of the 2025 board meeting calendar, talk of district financials from May, and a first reading of a board policy review on suspensions, among other items. KC School Board meetings are open to the public and stream live at the district’s YouTube channel.
Pageland Watermelon Festival kicks off Thursday
PAGELAND, S.C. — The 2024 Pageland Watermelon Festival will kick off its festivities on Thursday, July 18, when the carnival opens at 6 p.m. in downtown Pageland. The three-day festival, which started 73 years ago, runs July 18-20 and includes a 5K race, live music, car show, rodeo, mechanical bull, rides, craft and food vendors, seed-spitting content, best watermelon outfit contest, and the all new Watermelon King and Queen.

(AP) — In a clash over the past versus the future, some descendants of enslaved people in St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana, are fighting to keep a grain terminal from being built in their historic Black neighborhood. The Greenfield Wallace Grain Export Facility would take in and export grain byproducts via trucks, trains and barges. Some residents are concerned construction and pollution from the facility will destroy the historic Black community of Wallace. Other residents hope it will bring jobs and revitalize the town. They fear that without it, Wallace's population will continue to decline.
