Items on the agenda include public comment, an executive session on legal advice regarding development, and a couple of zoning ordinances among other items. Camden City Council will meet on Tuesday June 25th inside chambers of the Government Center in Camden at 6pm. Items on the agenda include public comment, public hearings on the millage rate and budget for the next fiscal year, an accommodations tax committee report, appointments to a couple of boards and an executive session to receive legal advice among other items. Kershaw County Council meetings are open to the public and stream live at the county’s YouTube Channel.

Drug Awareness and Recovery Foundation seeks to save lives
PAGELAND, SC — The Clark Ashton Cato Drug Awareness and Recovery Foundation is continually striving to educate young people about the dangers of fentanyl poisoning. The foundation was created last year by Melinda Cato, a Pageland native who lost her son, Clark Cato, Sept. 20, 2020 to fentanyl poisoning at the age of 32.
Graffiti vandal arrested
Camden Police Department (CPD) officers and Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) deputies arrested a Camden man on June 19 following a joint investigation into a string of graffiti incidents where the word “Dismal” was spray-painted and etched into glass at multiple locations throughout the city and county.
Community Outreach strives to reach the youth

Chapman: ‘If you love your job, it’s easy’
Sherrie Chapman’s days at Northeastern Technical College are very calm working part time as Associate Director of Workforce Development and Special Projects. If you caught her before retirement, she was living a whirlwind of meetings, special meetings, Faith Christian School Board, traveling, local boards, First Steps Board, Student Government Association projects, Rotary Club, organizing on-campus events, Red Cross Board, and creating curriculum as NETC’s Dean of Workforce.
CMA cadets participate in National History Day
Before the school year ended, a number of junior and senior cadets at Camden Military Academy received the National History Day Regional Award for advancing to first-place in the South Carolina state competition. The cadets then competed in the National History Day Championship, set for June 9-14 at the University of Maryland at College Park, outside of Washington, D.C., on which the Chronicle-Independent will report at a later date.
RUBY JEAN WILSON GELDERMAN
Ruby Jean Wilson Gelderman, 76, widow of Robert H. Gelderman Sr., died Saturday, June 22, 2024, at The Terrace in Bishopville. Born May 19, 1948, in Darlington, she was a daughter of the late James C. Wilson and Ola Atkinson Wilson. Mrs. Gelderman retired from Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. She enjoyed playing bingo and baking and loved her family dearly.

There were plenty of reasons for the Kershaw County American Legion baseball team to send this one in. There was one incentive, however, which outweighed the others. Playing its first game in six days — and a non-league pairing, at that — Post 17 kept its perfect record intact through five games with a 5-0 win over visiting Chapin-Newberry Post 193/24 Thursday night at American Legion Park in Camden.
2024 Pageland Watermelon Festival

Retired CFD chief honored as S.C. Firefighter of the Year

African American Cultural Center hosts Team 521 All-Stars exhibit
A traveling photographic exhibit from the S.C. State Museum examining the story of a Black baseball team from Rembert and its fans has made its way to Camden. The exhibit, featuring 40 photographs, is on display through September at the African American Cultural Center, at 517 York St., next to the Price House.
