MAN’S BODY FOUND NEAR LOYALHANNA LAKE
State police have not offered any details into the death yesterday of a man near Loyalhanna Lake, in Westmoreland County between Saltsburg and New Alexandria. The body of 65-year-old John R. Schoch of Loyalhanna Township was found at about 5 PM near his bicycle in a gravel area near Bush Road. The Westmoreland County Coroner says the cause and manner of death are pending the results of an autopsy. State police are investigating.
BUSY SUMMER ROADWORK SCHEDULE ROLLS ON
A number of road and bridge projects are on the schedule for this week throughout the region. Nighttime resurfacing begins tomorrow on West Pike in White and Armstrong Townships. Milling and paving will be done between 8 PM and 6 AM nightly through August 3rd between Ben Franklin Road at the YMCA and the Route 422 intersection. One-lane traffic will be controlled by flaggers.

Volaura Askew, Albert Spicer Caused Death Of 5-Year-Old: AG
Volaura 'Val' Askew, 28 of Johnstown, "exposed her 5-year-old daughter to fentanyl/heroin in the hours and days before the child was found dead in her Johnstown home on October 27, 2022," the Attorney General explained when Daily Voice first reported her charges in July 2023. In February of 2024, she pleaded "guilty to involuntary manslaughter and related charges, and is serving a 2-to-4-year state prison sentence," Henry stated in the updated release.
Penn Hills Fugitive Armon Thompkins Captured, Girlfriend Alaizah Howard Charged with Hindering Apprehension
After nearly a year of evading law enforcement, 22-year-old Armon Thompkins from Penn Hills was apprehended, with officials also charging his girlfriend, Alaizah Howard, 21, for her alleged role in hindering his capture. The Allegheny County Sheriff's Office, following a concerted effort involving the FBI, tracked down Thompkins to a residence on Elias Drive in Penn Hills, as detailed by TribLIVE. On the scene, detectives discovered both Thompkins and Howard in the basement of the house, concealing themselves in a bid to remain unnoticed by authorities.
LONGTIME BRUSH VALLEY FIRE CHIEF PASSES AWAY
A longtime member and former chief of the Brush Valley Fire Department has passed away. (Photo courtesy Bowser Funeral Home and Cremation Services) Edward “Dick” Altemus died on Wednesday. He served the Brush Valley Fire Department for 65 years, 63 of them as its chief. He was also employed as a machinist for Fisher Scientific for 35 years. Altemus was also a fixture at Penns Manor sporting events and was also a coach for several teams.
POLICE REPORTS: DISORDERLY CONDUCT, HARASSMENT
An Indiana man was charged with disorderly conduct in an incident on Monday in Indiana. Borough police say that officers were dispatched to the “00” block of North 7th Street on July 15th for a report of a man yelling at passing vehicles and pedestrians in the area. When police got there, they found 38-year-old Matthew Palmer and upon further investigation, found he was continuing to make unreasonable noise to try and cause public inconvenience, annoyance and alarm, according to the report. Charges were filed through District Judge Tony Sottile’s office.
