Commentary: There is a better solution to the traffic bottleneck at Highways 17 and 41
Not all mistakes are the same. There are simple mistakes, serious mistakes and generational mistakes. The effects of generational mistakes persist for decades. Without a change in direction, state and local officials are preparing to make a generational mistake, one that will affect thousands of citizens who travel U.S. Highway 17 North in Mount Pleasant for years to come. This mistake is their apparent intention to perpetuate the severe traffic jam at the intersection of Highways 17 and 41 caused by northbound cars turning left onto Highway 41. Currently, those cars have to wait for a left-turn arrow to cross the three southbound traffic lanes to get onto Highway 41. This not only backs up the northbound traffic waiting for the turn signal, but also backs up the southbound traffic that has to wait while the northbound cars turn in front of them. This arrangement results in both northbound and southbound traffic being held up for the left turn.
