Protecting our ecosystems
Several community members were on hand at Boone Hall Plantation's June 5 unveiling of the Willie & Kathy Oyster Reef, located creekside. Recycled oyster shells from the Lowcountry Oyster Festival, provided by the Charleston Restaurant Foundation, were collected and prepared by the Coastal Conservation Association of South Carolina and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources for the reef build. This reef was named in honor of Willie McRae, the late owner of Boone Hall Plantation, and Kathy Britzius, the late executive director of the Charleston Restaurant Association (Foundation). A special bond was formed between the pair more than 40 years ago that led to the inception of the renowned Lowcountry Oyster Festival, which is held at Boone Hall annually. Each year, this collaborative effort has expanded, incorporating new organizations and initiatives dedicated to raising awareness and promoting sustainability for local oysters.
