Howard D. Miller
Howard Dwain Miller of Crete, formally of Friend, passed away July 8, 2024, at Bryan East Medical Campus in Lincoln, at the age of 96 years, 8 months, and 20 days. He was born Oct. 19, 1927, in rural Milford, to Eli and Etna (Alber) Miller, the youngest of four children. He was united in marriage to Bonnie June Smith on Nov. 27, 1947, and in 2022, they celebrated 75 years together. Randall Ray and Jeanne Yavonne were chosen to complete their family.

York Elementary School will hold New Student Registration on Tuesday, July 30 from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. and on Wednesday, July 31 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. York Middle School will hold New Student Registration on Tuesday, July 30 and Wednesday, July 31 from 8 a.m. until noon and from 1 to 4 p.m. both days. Concordia University Athletics has announced its 2023-24 Concordia Senior Athletes of the Year. As voted upon by members of the athletic department, Joey Grabanski has been selected as the 2023-24 Concordia Male Senior Athlete of the Year while Camryn Opfer and Josie Puelz have been recognized as 2023-24 Co-Concordia Female Senior Athletes of the Year. As senior athletes of the year, the three standout Bulldogs will automatically be nominated for future consideration as members of the Concordia Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Aurora 4R School Board deserves the community’s full support for sending a strong message to students last month by banning the use of cell phones during school hours. This decision will not be unanimously popular, which was evident in some of the social media reactions posted by students. However, the goal of providing an environment free from distractions and the constant allure of social media, games and messaging makes any pushback pale in comparison to the benefits of a phone-free classroom.

Beulah M. Garhart, age 91 of Stromsburg, died Sunday, July 14, 2024 in Stromsburg. She was born on July 12, 1933 to Irvin and Ruby M. (Timmerman) Cloyd in Ewing. She graduated from Ewing High School in 1951. On April 19, 1952 she was united in marriage to George Alfred Garhart in O’Neill.
