McDowell County students earn honors at Western Carolina University for Spring 2024
Western Carolina University has recognized its student body for their academic accomplishments during the spring 2024 semester. Several McDowell County residents were named to the school’s dean’s list, according to a press release by the university. To qualify for this honor, students must achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher while completing 12 or more credit hours.
Marion man arrested for drug possession, drug trafficking
MARION, NC (WLOS) — A Marion man was arrested last week after being found in possession of drugs, including heroin and methamphetamine. On June 20, Steven Ray Arrowood, 64, was arrested after officers with the Marion Police Department in conjunction with the McDowell Drug Enforcement Team, executed a narcotics search warrant at his home.
Governor Cooper Signs State Disaster Declaration for the City of Marion in McDowell County
“This declaration will help the City of Marion as the people and local government work to rebuild, recover and prepare for future storms,” said Governor Cooper. The Governor’s Order authorizes state-funded disaster assistance in the form of grants for roads and bridges and emergency protective measures. This disaster declaration expires sixty days after issuance.

Marion man charged with fentanyl possession
A Marion man has been charged with possession of fentanyl. On Wednesday, June 19, Deputy William Guzman of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office spotted Jacob Daniel Cordell, 36, walking on Spaulding Road and was aware he had an outstanding arrest warrant. A search of Cordell during the arrest turned up approximately 1.5 grams of fentanyl, according to a news release.

A Marion man has been charged with using his home as a location for the purchase of illegal narcotics.
