Crews begin plugging newly discovered orphan oil well in Shawnee Township
SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP, OH (WLIO) - Contractors began work Thursday to seal an abandoned oil well discovered in Shawnee Township. The well was discovered when a homeowner noticed oil leaking from the ground on their property. The costs to clean up the area and plug the well to prevent new leaks are covered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Orphan Well Program. The program receives millions in funding from both the state and federal governments because unattended leaks could pollute the soil and nearby water sources, like the little Ottawa River near this property. The crew expects to be done within a week or two, but if there are any unexpected problems or new leaks, it could take a few months.

Southern Indiana Bank Announces Merger with Heartland BancCorp
German American Bancorp has announced it will merge with Ohio-based Heartland BancCorp. You don't have to drive too far in southwest Indiana to run across a German American Bank building. Growing up in Petersburg, Indiana, I often remember seeing the company's large bank building on Main Street with the flags waving in the wind out front. To me, it's become a staple along the stretch of wide road, and I don't think the city would look the same without it. Since I was a kid, the corporation has grown tremedously and has just announced yet another feat that will expand services into a neighboring state.
