Texas man charged after swindling Marshall County woman of $136,000

by April Scheinoha Reporter A Texas man has been charged in Marshall County District Court after he allegedly swindled a Marshall County resident out of $136,000 over three separate transactions in 2023. Mutahir Ahmed Khan, 23, McKinney, has been charged with felony theft. The complaint was filed April 19, and a warrant was issued for his arrest at that time. Kahn was recently arrested during a traffic stop in Pennsylvania. He made his initial court appearance in Marshall County District Court on Friday, July 19. The charge stemmed from a Feb. 22 call to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office from a McKinney police officer. According to the complaint, the officer said he was working on a fraud case and an alleged victim may be a Marshall County woman. Later that day, the Marshall County woman talked with a Marshall County sheriff’s deputy, saying that she allegedly sent a large amount of money to a man in Texas. She told the deputy that the scammers had access to her Social Security number. The woman allegedly sent cash in $100 bills, totalling about $36,000, in book pages to the man. She said two shipments were made on Aug. 22, 2023, to two CVS stores in Texas. Eight days later, the woman was instructed to buy $100,000 in gold bars online. After receiving the gold bars, she was told that someone would go to her home and pick up the gold bars Sept. 1. That day, the same man told her to place the gold bars in the back seat of a vehicle parked outside of her home. She placed the gold bars inside, and the motorist drove away. She was unable to see who was driving the vehicle. Later, the scammer was allegedly determined to be Khan. He was seen obtaining the packages from the CVS stores in Texas. In a press release from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, it was noted that the McKinney Police Department executed a search warrant at Khan’s home and allegedly found pictures and evidence of the fraud in Warren. After the search warrant was executed, Khan allegedly admitted collecting the packages and delivering them to another individual elsewhere. He allegedly wouldn’t give law enforcement the name of the individual. Khan said he had been coerced and compensated to collect and deliver the packages. Khan allegedly admitted obtaining about 40 packages from August to September 2023. He said he didn’t know the contents of the packages. In the press release, Sheriff Jason Boman thanked the McKinney Police Department and the work of his deputies in solving this case.
