Multi-dry weather hazards through Friday; Hot and sunny weekend
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) -The dry and hot weather pattern will be bringing some hazards with it through Friday, with conditions somewhat improving into the weekend. A strong ridge of high pressure is hovering over the area at this time. This system will continue to bring in smoke from the Canada and Northwest United States wildfires through Friday. This will bring in some hazy conditions across the region Thursday night into Friday. An air quality alert is in effect for this very reason now until Friday 9 a.m. CDT Friday. People should exercise caution when going outside during these times, especially people that have asthma and other lung issues. Lows overnight Thursday will drop into the 60s with mainly clear conditions otherwise. Highs for Friday will climb into the mid to upper 90s with some areas reaching 100. With the constant dry northwest flow, breezy winds with speeds around 10 to 15 mph, that will be picking up during the day Friday and abnormally dry conditions will bring in the potential for some fire concerns, especially into North and Western Greater Nebraska. A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 9 p.m. MDT for this very reason. People in and outside of the headline are urged to not burn outdoors, discard anything flammable properly and in the event of a fire, call 9-1-1. Mainly sunny conditions are expected during the day Friday.

Bayard man sentenced for falsification of union financial reports
United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Donald Fox, 55, of Bayard, Nebraska, was sentenced on July 24, 2024 in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for four counts of falsification of annual financial reports filed by a labor union. Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Fox to four years of probation. Fox will also have to serve five weekends in jail. Fox has also been ordered to pay $14,874.05 in restitution to the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 1836. Prior to sentencing, Fox paid $9,746.07 in restitution back to the union.
Local Truck Inspections Held in Fremont
Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) Carrier Enforcement Division conducted local commercial vehicle inspections on July 23rd and 24th in Fremont, Nebraska. During this effort, the Metropolitan Aggressive and Prevention Selective (MAPS) Team conducted 66 vehicle inspections. Troopers discovered 154 violations of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and state law. Troopers placed 16 vehicles out of service (not allowed to return to the road). Additionally, troopers issued a total of 35 CVSA decals. The decals indicate that the vehicle inspected did not have any immediate safety issues.
