Letter: Live with the dandelions
There appears to be some controversy regarding dandelions. A recent letter writer encouraged trying to eliminate them. First off, we all know that is darn well impossible. Second, he suggested using products with harsh chemicals, which is totally unacceptable. I have dogs, and I certainly don’t want them running around...
Multiple mid-July Mat-Su fishery changes
Since writing last week’s column I’ve heard of sockeye salmon being caught at Fish Creek out Knik Goose Bay Road. 54 sockeye were recorded passing the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) Fish Creek Weir through Monday July 8. Sport sockeye catches will likely increase as more fish migrate upstream through Sunday June 14. The Fish Creek salmon sport fishery will then close on July 15. From July 15 - 31 the Fish Creek dip net fishery MAY open, by emergency order, if ADF&G determines adequate escapement through the weir will likely occur.. Note: within the past decade I believe the earliest the Fish Creek personal use dip net fishery has ever opened has been July 19.

Goals for new Alaska crime law range from harsher penalties for drug dealers to reducing recidivism
Gov. Letter: Reality vs. image
Just a thought about President Joe Biden’s “poor performance” in the debates. There are both young and old people who are imperfect, who can not remember names and faces but have good hearts and sound judgment. America is the entertainment capital of the world and worships good “actors” who show confidence and no sign of weakness. This is why we need Mr. Trump to show us the folly of our ways.
Big Lake woman dies in motorcycle collision
A Big Lake woman has died following a motorcycle versus pedestrian collision in the Big Lake area on July 8. In an online dispatch, Alaska State Troopers were notified of the accident, in which a Yamaha dirt bike was being operated on a paved walking path at a high rate of speed when the operator collided with 79-year-old Nadara Williams. AST and EMS responded to the scene and transported Williams to an area hospital for treatment.
Concerns about first responders
First responders - law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) – are often heralded as heroes who rush to our aid in times of crisis. However, there may be instances when we feel the need to voice a complaint about their conduct or actions. While it's important to recognize that these professionals work in high-stress, complex environments, you also need to know how to address concerns when they arise.
Palmer’s Levi Hopkins turned an unexpected opportunity into a gold medal-winning performance
As a kid, Palmer’s Levi Hopkins used to wake up early and watch international wrestling such as the World Championships, Pan-American Games and the Olympics. So, when an unforeseen opportunity to represent his country on an international stage presented itself last month, Hopkins jumped at the chance, even if it meant delaying his return to Alaska to assist in his family’s business.
