Governor’s vetoes whittle list of funded Alaska Long Trail projects from 9 down to 4
Only four of nine projects that the Legislature funded this year as part of an envisioned Alaska Long Trail network survived Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s veto pen. Dunleavy’s vetoes left a bit over $1.1 million of the $3.7 million in Alaska Long Trail projects that lawmakers approved in their capital budget.
Work continues on erosion of Glenn Highway near Sutton
Road crews began dropping riprap ahead of the July 4 holiday to milepost 63 of the Glenn Highway, which has been undergoing emergency repairs to erosion from the Matanuska River, which began undercutting the roadway over the weekend, forcing closures and traffic diversions. Both lanes of the highway remain open to the King River bridge construction.
Public invited to 2024 County Cutts Car Show
The 49th State Street Rodders is putting on its annual Country Cutts Car Show at the Country Cutts salon in downtown Palmer Sunday, July 7 from 12 to 4 p.m. The County Cutts Car Show will feature a wide variety of classic cars and other vehicles with prizes given out to participants. This event will also feature a local food truck, AK Best Gourmet Dogs that attendees can purchase food and beverages from.
Alaska Regional makes third bid for freestanding ER in South Anchorage
Alaska Regional Hospital officials are mounting a third attempt to build a stand-alone emergency department in South Anchorage. State officials last year rejected the hospital’s request for the certificate needed to build a 12-bed, $17.6 million freestanding ER facility. In 2015, state officials also denied an Alaska Regional proposal to build stand-alone emergency departments in South Anchorage and Eagle River.
AWWU director takes on second role leading Anchorage’s hydropower utility
Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility General Manager Mark Corsentino has taken on a second role with the municipality as director of the Anchorage Hydropower Utility. In a unanimous vote, the Anchorage Assembly confirmed Corsentino’s appointment by Mayor Suzanne LaFrance during a meeting late Tuesday afternoon. Corsentino will take on the additional duty while continuing as general manager of AWWU.

2 more Alaska inmates die as details emerge on early-morning Anchorage jail death
No force was used at the Anchorage jail against a man who died there last Wednesday, according to state corrections officials. As his death remained under investigation Tuesday, officials also announced two more Southcentral Alaska inmates suffered medical issues and died last week. That brings the state’s total number of in-state custody deaths to 10, the same number as all of last year, prompting continued calls from the American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska for answers and action.
