Alpine Bar in Biwabik damaged after morning fire
BIWABIK, Minn. (Northern News Now) - A fire broke out in downtown Biwabik Thursday morning. According to Biwabik Fire Chief Danny Mackey, reports of fire alarms at the Alpine Bar first came in around 10:20 a.m. Seven additional Iron Range agencies responded and contained the fire to the first floor.

Minnesota Looking to Increase Numbers of This Animal
The Minnesota DNR in collaboration with the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa plan to move elk from the northwestern part of the state to the northeastern part of the state near Cloquet and north. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. He says the plan is to transfer 15 to 20 elk from the northwestern part of the state to the northeastern part with the hopes of growing the herd. Schmitt says elk used to live in that part of the state many years ago. He explains the plan is to do this annually starting in 2026 until the elk reproduce on their own.

Midwest Braces for Extreme Heatwave in Early August
Kansas City, MO – The Midwest is set to experience extreme heat in early August, with temperatures significantly above normal across the region. The US National Weather Service has issued a forecast predicting a widespread heatwave from August 1-7. According to the NWS, this heatwave will encompass much of the Midwest, pushing daytime highs into the upper 90s and low 100s.
