Nashwauk Area Community Fund Donates to N-K Art Department
NASHWAUK—The mission of the Nashwauk Keewatin High School (NKHS) Art Department is to foster student creativity and enhance critical thinking skills. By using a combination of group instruction alongside individual choice projects, students complete their artwork using innovative problem-solving strategies. A $2000 grant from the Nashwauk Area Community Fund (NACF) for adding additional equipment and supplies will allow the Art Department to further challenge students with new and exciting tools and techniques, resulting in a deeper understanding of the Visual Arts. Funds awarded will be used to purchase a ceramic baking kiln, two pottery wheels, two air brush kits, and 22 tabletop easels. The Nashwauk Area Community Fund is a community-based fund providing discretionary grants to projects and initiatives in the Nashwauk area to improve the quality of life for local citizens and provide a way for citizens and businesses to give to their local community. This fund serves nonprofit organizations in Nashwauk, Keewatin, Nashwauk Township, Buck Lake, Pengilly, Goodland and Swan Lake areas. Biwabik's Alpine Bar damaged by fire
BIWABIK—A fire Thursday morning damaged the Alpine Bar in downtown Biwabik and was contained to the first floor by the multiple fire departments that responded, according to the Friends of the Northland FireWire. The fire was reported around 10:15 a.m. by citizens who saw smoke coming from the building and fire alarms sounding, a police department news release said. No one was in the building at the time. No injuries were reported and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire. According to the news release, the structure sustained light fire, smoke and water damage overall. Departments on the scene included: City of Biwabik, Lakeland, Gilbert, Hoyt Lakes, Palo, Fayal, and Mountain Iron. The Biwabik Ambulance Service is providing medical standby at the scene.
