NBC Reporter: It’s ‘Obviously a Possibility’ Shooter Might Have Targeted Trump for Not Being ‘Conservative Enough’

NBC News correspondent Tom Winter theorized the man police say tried to kill former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania on Saturday might have targeted him for not being “conservative enough.”

Winter joined MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Sunday’s edition of Alex Witt Reports during the network’s ongoing coverage of the assassination attempt against Trump that left a Trump supporter dead, the former president with a graze wound to the ear, and two others wounded.

Police have identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks , who was shot dead by the U.S. Secret Service moments after officials said he opened fire from a rooftop with an AR-15-style rifle.

When discussing the latest information about Crooks with Mitchell, Winter reported the man had very little presence on social media but did have a Discord account that he would use from time to time. There were no red flags related to his account activity on the platform.

Winter then noted that Crooks registered as a Republican in 2022 when he turned 18 and – as Reuters reported – he had also previously made a small donation to the progressive political action committee ActBlue.

“We do know he is registered, according to registry records a registered Republican,” Winter said. “There’s a $15 donation to a Democratic cause.”

Winter said he had confirmed that Crooks had made the ActBlue donation and then got onto the topic of what might have motivated the 20-year-old with no clear ideology to try to assassinate Trump.

“It could certainly be politically motivated,” Winter told Mitchell. “We know how individuals approach this. There’s been so many things said about Donald Trump that are negative. There are some people that don’t think Donald Trump is conservative enough. There’s a whole gamut of feelings and what people think about Donald Trump, and so is that what motivated this person? Certainly, obviously a possibility.”

Police have not yet commented on a suspected motive in Saturday’s shooting, which left Trump supporter Corey Comperatore dead .
