Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) compared President Joe Biden’s suggested Supreme Court reforms to the Jan 6 Capitol riot in a new interview.

“That’s what some people were trying to do Jan. 6 — to break the system of handing an administration from one to the next,” McConnell told Punchbowl News in an interview conducted this week and published on Friday. “We can have our arguments, but we ought to not try to break the rules.”

McConnell has had a testy relationship with Donald Trump since he said the former president and others “provoked” the Capitol riot.

In a Washington Post column, Biden outlined a three-part plan to reform the Supreme Court which includes term limits, a binding code of conduct, and a “no one is above the law” amendment.

In previous comments to The Hill , McConnell called Biden’s proposals “unconstitutional” and said the plan would be “dead on arrival” in Congress.

“I couldn’t be more disappointed. This is a man who was chairman of the Judiciary Committee for a long time. He absolutely knows what he recommended is unconstitutional, to try to limit the terms of the Supreme Court justices who under the Constitution are appointed for life,” the Republican leader said.

McConnell offered some critical words for his own party in the interview too. While he did not directly criticize Trump or his running mate JD Vance , McConnell did say that he and the former president have a “different point of view” on Vance.

He also accused his party of falling short in the actual winning elections part of the job.

“The way you win the argument is to get more people elected,” he said. “And [Democrats] have done a better job of that over the years than we have.”

McConnell said the current messaging from people like Vance is not helping.

“I mean, even the slogans are what they were in the 30s — ‘America First,'” he said.
