Joy Reid Says Mark Kelly Would Have Been a Safer Pick for Kamala Harris VP Because He’s ‘Mayonnaise Sandwich’ White

MSNBC’s Joy Reid argued Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) would have been the “most conventionally safe pick” as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate because he’s “super White.”

“This is not the pick I expected she would make,” Reid said in a TikTok video in reaction to Harris choosing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) as her vice president candidate.

The MSNBC host added she thought Harris would “go astronaut,” referring to Kelly who was an astronaut before getting into politics.

“He, to me, would have been the safest, most conventionally safe pick. White, super White, like mayonnaise sandwich on wonder bread white, from a border state, he could have made a strong argument for her handling of the border,” she said.

Reid called Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) the “riskiest” of the finalists due to his staunch support of Israel in its war with Hamas.

Reid applauded the Walz pick, saying his actions as governor reflect progressive politics and align with Harris’s vision. She also touted the fact that Walz kicked off using the term “weird” to describe Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance . On her MSNBC show, Reid declared Walz and Harris were making politics “joyful again.”

“This is the happy pick. It’s a heart pick. It’s a smart pick. It’s a pick that comes from a position of strength,” she said. “This is VP Harris owning it and owning her strength and saying, ‘no, I don’t have to pick who the sort of focus groups would tell me to pick. I’m going to pick who the heart picks.
