Kaitlan Collins Tells Colbert How She Spoke With Trump From an UBER Moments After Learning Biden Dropped Out

CNN’s Kaitlan Collins appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and shared just how unpredictable it can be to work in breaking news.

During her conversation with Stephen Colbert on Monday, Collins revealed that she first got the news of President Joe Biden’s surprise withdrawal from the presidential race while she was in an Uber on a quiet summer Sunday afternoon:

Collins: I was going to Brooklyn to meet a friend’s baby. And I look at my phone, within 10 seconds after being in the car, and Biden has tweeted out that he is dropping out of the race. And I was like, “I need you to turn around!”

Colbert: To your driver?

Collins: And the Uber driver was like, “What?” And I was like, “I just — can you go back where we were just, there? Can you just go back there?” Because I needed a blazer, I needed my CNN badge. And he was like, “Okay, it’s a bunch of–” I was like, “I don’t care, just, can we just hurry?”

But that Uber ride got even wilder when she hopped on the phone with former President Donald Trump to get his comment:

Collins: I run in the house, I come back, we’re on the way to CNN, and I don’t have my headphones. But we wanted to know, you know, what was Trump’s reaction to this major news that has totally changed the presidential race for him? So I call Donald Trump, and I don’t have my headphones. So, I put it on speaker in the backseat. And I’m writing down his quotes–

Colbert: The guy doesn’t know who you are or anything?

Collins: No, no, no, no. The Uber driver, like Trump’s voice is like booming through. He knows why I’m calling and what quotes I wanted. The Uber driver is turning around. He’s so confused. He’s looking at me, he’s looking at my phone. He’s like, “Is that whose voice I think that is?” And I just sprinted out of the Uber. And eight hours later when we got off air, I checked the the app to make sure I tipped him.
