Hillbilly Elegy Star Glenn Close Knocks JD Vance Over ‘Childless Cat Ladies’ Digs

Actress Glenn Close took to Instagram to join critics against Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance’s past comments on “childless cat ladies.”

Close previously earned a Best Support Actress Oscar nomination for her role as Vance’s grandmother in the 2020 adaptation of Vance’s best-selling memoir, Hillbilly Elegy .

“Eve would have left a bleeding mouse head in the bed of anyone who criticized any kind of lady with a CAT!” Close wrote in a caption for a photo of her and her cat.

Vance has accused the media and critics of misrepresenting his comments on Americans without biological children, but also continued to stand by his claim that Democrats are promoting not having children. Vance has earned backlash over resurfaced comments from 2021 in which he specifically called out Democrats like Vice President Kamala Harris , Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg , and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) for not having children. Part of the backlash has been that Harris was and is a stepmother and Buttigieg adopted with his partner shortly after Vance’s comments.

Vance raged against the Democratic Party at the time, calling it a group run by “childless cat ladies.”

“It’s not a criticism of people who don’t have children. I explicitly said in my remarks, despite the fact that the media has lied about this, that this is not about criticizing people who for various reasons didn’t have kids, this is about criticizing the Democratic Party for becoming anti-family and anti-child,” he claimed in a recent interview with Megyn Kelly .

Close and Vance collaborated together on Hillbilly Elegy with one behind the scenes look including Vance praising Close’s performance. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly , Close called talking with Vance “crucial” for her performance.
