Maggie Haberman Accuses Trump of ‘Trying Pretty Hard To Bait’ Harris Over Her Race: Really Struggles With ‘Black Women’

New York Times senior political correspondent Maggie Haberman accused former President Donald Trump of trying to race-bait Vice President Kamala Harris on CNN, Tuesday.
Asked by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper why Trump was so “rattled” by Harris’ campaign, Haberman said, “She is a woman and she is a Black woman, and both of those factors have proven pretty challenging for him in the past.”
She continued, “His allies will say he is an equal opportunity offender and he goes after everybody, and it’s certainly true that he insults a wide variety of people, but he has seemed to really struggle with women opponents, women critics, and particularly Black women who are critics.”
On the similarity between Trump’s attacks against Harris and former President Barack Obama , Haberman told Cooper:
Trump is a man of few moves, and so we have seen him make the same ones over and over. You are correct that he is trying to run against Kamala Harris the same way that he attacked President Obama when Obama was in office and Trump was flirting with the idea of running for president in 2011 and was promoting the birther lie, suggesting that the first Black president was not legitimate to serve.
She concluded, “If you look at the Trump War Room account on Twitter, they are trying pretty hard to bait her and to bait Democrats into a fight about race, and that has been something so far that the Harris campaign has not taken the bait on, but this is something that we have seen him do before.”
Since President Joe Biden announced he would be withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race and endorsing Harris for president, Trump has repeatedly taken aim at Harris’ race.
Last month the National Association of Black Journalists conference, Trump told ABC News reporter Rachel Scott , “She [Kamala] was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black. And now she wants to be known as Black. So, I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?”
After Scott pointed out that Harris “has always identified as a Black woman,” Trump replied, “I respect either one, but she obviously doesn’t because she was Indian all the way. And then all of a sudden she made a turn and she became a Black person.”
