Carville Says Constantly Calling for Biden to Drop Out Turned Him Into ‘the Person I’ve Always Hated’

Democratic strategist James Carville told MSNBC’s Ari Melber that being a leading voice calling for President Joe Biden to drop his reelection campaign turned him into “the person I’ve always hated.”

Melber asked Carville on Tuesday evening if he was one of the Democrats who helped to push Biden out of the race. The president dropped out of the race last month and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. Carville, a former advisor to Bill Clinton, told Melber that his own media hits leading up to Biden dropping out of the race were because he felt like there was no other option.

“I have not had one person come up to me and say, gee, I wish it would have turned out differently,” he said.

Carville was one of the loudest voices calling for Democrats to replace Biden at the top of the ticket, at one point calling the president an “idiotic choice.” Biden eventually dropped his reelection bid amid concerns about his age and stamina.

“I didn’t think I could stay silent,” Carville told Melber.

Carville’s only regret was turning into the type of political pundit that once got under his skin as someone who worked on political campaigns. The Democrat said he got plenty of criticism from his own party and none of it shocked him.

“I didn’t like doing it because I became the person I’ve always hated, the guy on the sidelines on TV, taking cheap shots, we’re in the arena, we got the dust and dirt, we’re fighting every day, you’re killing us, you’re helping Trump, and I understand all of that,” he said. “And nothing that happened to this or any criticism that I got was I surprised about.”
