MSNBC’s Alex Wagner Mocks Trump’s ‘Miserable Failure’ in Attacking Kamala Harris: Proves He’s Not the ‘Master Brander’

MSNBC’s Alex Wagner told Stephen Colbert that Donald Trump’s “spin” as a “master brander” is falling apart, in the wake of his attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris.

Wagner was a guest on Colbert’s The Late Show on Wednesday where the late night host argued Trump is struggling to find a successful line of attack on Harris. The vice president has done better in polling against Trump than President Joe Biden when he was still running for reelection while Trump has earned some bipartisan pushback for criticizing Harris’s laugh and her past descriptions about being biracial.

“Why do you think he’s having such a hard time putting a target on her? Because he has attacked her in several different ways, he’s trying to burn her, but the fat is splashing back in his face every time, if you know what I mean,” Colbert told Wagner.

“He smells like cooking oil,” Wagner said. “I think we have in some ways believed Trump’s spin that he’s some master brander, right?”

The MSNBC host argued that Trump benefitted from the long public histories of Biden and Hillary Clinton when branding and running against them. Harris, she said, does not carry such weight and attempts at attacking her have been either “pathetic” or “misogynist” or “racist.”

“The reality is that Joe Biden has been in politics literally forever, and Hillary Clinton has been a known entity in American politics forever. Both of them had sort of calcified personas as far as the American public was concerned, and Trump figured out Crooked Hillary, but then he also tried out Crooked Biden,” she said. “He’s not actually that good at framing people. He just kind of picks something off the floor and throws it at the wall, and it happened to work with Hillary, but in large part, both Biden and Clinton were already known.”

Wagner said Trump’s attempts on Harris have been a “miserable failure” thus far.

“He doesn’t have that advantage with Harris, and it’s been a miserable failure,” she said.
