Meteorologist Has Panic Attack on Live TV

Australian news presenter and meteorologist Nate Byrne had a panic attack on live TV — and he and the rest of the crew used the opportunity as a teaching moment.

During a live broadcast of ABC News Breakfast on Tuesday, Byrne started experiencing symptoms of a panic attack while delivering a weather report. Rather than try to cover it up, he openly discussed it and tossed the show back to anchor Lisa Millar , who took the reins without a beat and reminded viewers that Byrne was prone to such attacks. Here was their exchange, and Byrne’s symptoms are apparent:

Byrne: We’ve got big falls right through that part of the country, and we’re going to see lots more rain in the days ahead… I’m actually going to need to stop for a second. Some of you may know that I occasionally get affected by some panic attacks, and actually, that’s happening right now. Lisa, maybe I could hand back to you?

Millar: You certainly can Nate. And Nate wrote a great piece on the ABC online website about this, and I reckon we might re-up it because it’s fantastic that he has been so open and transparent about it. And the response when he first wrote about it and spoke about it was that everyone said, “Oh, thank God, Nate’s not perfect! We thought he was perfect, but actually he’s now sharing something!”

Later in the broadcast, Byrne returned and apologized saying, “Sorry if I gave anybody a bit of a scare there.”
