Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) issued a warning to Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) during his speech before a packed stadium at the 2024 Democratic National Convention: Donald Trump’s supporters tried to kill his last vice president.
Raskin, who led the second impeachment of Trump over the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol and served on the House Select Committee investigating the attack, spoke on the first night of the convention at the United Center in Chicago. He addressed the racous crowd of Democrats a few speakers after Hillary Clinton and shortly before President Joe Biden.
The House Democrat’s remarks centered mostly on Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election and the riot inspired by his claims the results were rigged against him.
I’ll never forget the pounding on the doors of the House chamber on January 6, where the screams to follow, hundreds of our police officers taunted and attacked, 140 of them were wounded by extremists wielding baseball bats, steel pipes, even American flags. Five people died that day. And four more of our officers took their own lives in the days and weeks that followed.
All of this after Trump was defeated by more than 7 million votes by the great Joe Biden. It was after 80 judges rejected every ridiculous claim raised by this sore loser who does not know how to take no for an answer from American voters, American courts, or American women.
Remember what the mob chanted as they stormed the Capitol? “Hang Mike Pence.”
“Someone should have told Donald Trump that the president’s job under Article II of the Constitution is to take care that the laws are faithfully executed — not that the vice president is executed,” Raskin continued. “Pence has now joined more than two dozen officials from Donald Trump’s own administration in denouncing him and his historical record. Pence is the first vice president in more than two centuries not to support the president he served with in a general election.”
At that point, Raskin addressed Vance, the Ohio senator Trump tapped to serve as his running mate.
“And by the way, JD Vance, do you understand why there was a sudden job opening for running mate on the GOP ticket? They tried to kill your predecessor! They tried to kill him because he would not follow Trump’s plan to destroy and nullify the votes of millions of Americans.”
Pence, Trump’s running mate in 2016, who went on to serve as his vice president, was the subject of attacks from the president when he certified Joe Biden’s win in 2020. Those attacks fueled rage from Trump’s supporters who stormed the Capitol, chanting “Hang Mike Pence” and searching for him in the halls of Congress that day.
Pence was rushed out of the Capitol by Secret Service, and since has said he cannot support Trump in his bid to return to the White House.
