Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) responded directly to protesters who crashed her interview with Stephen Colbert while she discussed Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas and protests against the strikes on Gaza.

Pelosi joined Colbert’s The Late Show on Tuesday for a special episode filmed live from Chicago where the Democratic National Convention is being held. After a protester yelled out “Free Palestine” when Pelosi was discussing the DNC and Vice President Kamala Harris , Colbert cut to commercial break and acknowledged a “protest” happening in his audience.

“There’s a protest going on right now,” Colbert said. “We’re going to go to commercial break but the subject is on Israel and Palestine and if you’ll have a seat, we have to go to the commercial break, but when we come back I’ll ask the next question I had on that subject.”

While discussing a potential ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, Pelosi earned applause from the audience after declaring, “War has no role in a civilized society.”

Some in the audience quickly turned though and more began screaming in protest of the Democratic leader.

“As you can see from the continuing protests out here, that answer is unsatisfying to some people because they believe that the United States — hold on one second, would you like to respond to what they’re saying?” Colbert said, pointing out to the protesters.

Pelosi said she couldn’t make out exactly what the group was saying.

“They’re screaming, I can’t hear them,” she said.

“They’ve said the United States should not have any role in supplying Israel arms to kill the people of Gaza. That’s what they’re saying,” Colbert said, earning applause.

Pelosi argued that Israel has a right to defend itself and said she still supports a “two state solution” for the region.

“Israel has a right to defend itself. And the hostages should be returned, but the other part of it that has been so major for all of us for many years is that there must be a two state solution,” she said. “You cannot have peace unless you have two states. Israel, a secure, Democratic, Jewish state in the region and the Palestinians having their own secure country there as well.”

As protesters continued to interrupt, Colbert made a final attempt to stop them and then wrapped up the interview.

“Please don’t interrupt my guests,” he said.

Pelosi ended the segment with applause as she asked the audience, “Isn’t it great to be in Chicago?!”
