Juan Williams was the sole defender on a Fox News panel of the economy under President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris following the release of data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showing job growth was significantly less than originally estimated.

The economy added 818,000 fewer jobs from March 2023 through March 2024 than originally reported. Adjustments and reevaluations are common for such reports, but the gap is wider than anticipated. This revision is the biggest downward turn from original estimates since 2009.

Kayleigh McEnany called the report “stunning” on Outnumbered before taking to a panel discussion with Kellyanne Conway , Juan Williams, Harris Faulkner , and Emily Compagno .

Williams argued that the report is “not good news,” but it’s far from a “doom and gloom story.”

“I don’t think there’s any debating this is the best economy in the world, but as we look at this revision — it’s a revision that’s done annually. Everybody revises during that period,” he said. “It’s still the case that on a monthly basis, we’ve been adding about 250,000 jobs per month and the unemployment rate is 4.3%, which is near a record low. So on all those measures, plus the fact that the stock market is near a record high, you have to say, boy, this is a great economy.”

McEnany responded by arguing that polling shows a majority of voters do not have the same confidence as Williams, citing a Gallup poll showing more than 70% believe the economy is headed in the wrong direction amid high inflation and cost of living concerns.

“Juan is mistaken for a couple of reasons,” Conway said, arguing that even lowering interest rates would not significantly impact everyday costs for people.

She accused the government of “lying” about job growth, and Campagno also accused government officials of selling a rosy picture that doesn’t line up with increased food and living costs.

“When we are told everything is fine, nothing to see here, that is not how a majority of Americans feel,” she said.

Faulkner added it’ll be “really hard” to turn certain economic realities around before the election for the current administration.

“Even if you lowered the interest rates in the next 15 minutes between now and November, that doesn’t touch the prices people pay for the things that they eat,” she said.
