Michigan AG Dares Supreme Court to Overturn Same-Sex Marriage Ruling: ‘Pry This Wedding Band From My Cold, Dead, Gay Hand’

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel challenged the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a 2015 decision striking down same-sex marriage bans as unconstitutional while speaking Thursday at the Democratic National Convention.

Nessel spoke in Chicago on the third night of her party’s convention when she described Vice President Kamala Harris as a candidate who would protect abortion and LGBT rights if elected in November.

“As California’s attorney general, Kamala Harris never shied away from a good fight,” Nessel said. “She’s held accountable environmental polluters, sexual abusers, and transnational gangs. But what really stands out is when she stood up and protected her constituent’s freedoms.” Michigan’s attorney general continued:

In 2011, she refused to defend California’s ban on same-sex marriage. She refused to argue that some families should have fewer rights than other families. It meant a lie. She was fighting for families, like mine. Now, in 2022, I faced a similar situation when after Roe v. Wade was overturned, Michigan’s archaic abortion ban was resurrected. But Vice President Harris had my back. And she reminded me that protecting people’s lives and defending their rights is our job. And just as the same-sex marriage ban was overturned in California, so, too, was the abortion ban in Michigan.

I got a message for the Republicans and the justices of the United States Supreme Court. You can pry this wedding band from my cold, dead, gay, hand. And I’m retaining a lot of water, so good luck with that.

To applause, the AG concluded that if Harris is elected president she would appoint progressive justices to the high court.

In an apparent nod to former President Donald Trump’s legal issues, Neesel said of Harris, “And let me tell you, Kamala knows you go from the courthouse to the White House, not the other way around.”

Nessel has been married to Alanna Maguire since the year the court found gay and lesbian couples could wed nationwide in a landmark Obergefell v. Hodges ruling.
