Fox News reporter Peter Doocy thought he scored a scooplet at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night regarding Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz .

But it turned out he got bad information about Minnesota’s governor.

Shortly before Walz took the stage to give a fiery and at times emotional speech to accept the vice presidential nomination, Doocy joined Fox News’s coverage from the floor of the convention.

“This a big moment on a convention night and I will show you why,” he said before explaining that the signs that convention-goers would hold during Walz’s speech had yet to be distributed. “You notice in all the big moments and all the still pictures in the newspaper, everybody has the same sign. But nobody’s got the signs yet. They’ve got volunteers with garbage bags full of whatever the sign is tonight.”

Doocy approached one worker and asked, “Can we see one?”

The woman smiled, shook her head, and said, “In minutes.”

“Ok,” he replied. “But they wait until the very end to start distributing the garbage bags full, and there will be people plenty left on the floor, I promise. Afterwards, if anybody up in the studio wants me to bring some. Back to you.”

Fox host Bret Baier proceeded to needle Doocy a bit.

“An investigative reporter would see if you could get that sign,” he said. “One more try with that lady right there. How about that guy?”

Doocy approached a man with another bag of signs and asked, “What’s the sign tonight?”

    “Governor Walz,” the man replied.

“It says ‘Governor Walz,'” Doocy echoed.

“Nice job, Peter,” Baier responded. “Good job.”

“Not ‘Coach,'” said one Fox panelist off-screen.

“I would’ve said ‘Coach,'” Baier agreed.

It turned out those instincts were right. Upon taking the stage, Walz – a former high school football coach – was greeted with signs reading “Coach Walz.”

During his speech, Walz spoke about his two kids, prompting his teenage son Gus to burst into tears and point to his father.

“That’s my dad!” he said .
