‘That’s What I’ve Been Told To Say!’ Gavin Newsom Gets Sarcastic About Kamala Harris Switch Being ‘Inclusive’ and ‘Bottom-Up’

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) joked about Vice President Kamala Harris’s path to the top of the Democratic Party ticket, sarcastically noting he’s been “told to say” it was a “very inclusive process.”

Newsom was one of multiple guests on the latest episode of Pod Save America , released Friday, centered around the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The governor was full of praise for Harris, but he kicked things off by making light of her becoming the party’s nominee without actually going through a primary.

“How are you feeling about the switch?” Pod Save America co-host Jon Favreau asked.

“We went through a very open process, a very inclusive process. It was bottom-up, I don’t know if you know that. That’s what I’ve been told to say!” Newsom said, laughing.

“It was a blitz primary, I believe is what they called it,” Favreau said.

Newsom continued by sarcastically calling the event a “30 minute convention.”

The governor quickly pivoted to highlighting how “unified” the party is behind Harris.

“What is amazing is how unified everybody is. I mean, it’s next level,” he said.

Newsom called Harris a “friend” of more than 20 years, dating back to before he was governor. Harris previously served as a senator and attorney general in California.

“She’s prepared, she’s tough, she’s tenacious, she doesn’t suffer fools,” he said.

Newsom’s name was thrown around by some as a potential replacement for President Joe Biden when he was still running his reelection campaign, though the governor always shut down speculation about White House ambitions and reiterated his support for Biden.
