Trump Goes After Members of His Own Golf Club, Accuses Them of Running Scared from Him at Club Championship: ‘They Can’t Handle the Pressure’

Donald Trump implied that even pro-level golfers are afraid to face him whenever one of his clubs hosts a club championship.

The former president appeared on the YouTube channel PGA Memes for a day of golfing with channel host Travis Miller . After one of his swings, Trump asked Miller how it looked. Miller told him, “It looks good,” before asking Trump what his handicap was down to.

In golf, a player’s handicap is determined by averaging how many strokes over par they shot — usually taking the best eight of their last twenty rounds. If a course is a par 72 — like Trump National in Washington, D.C. — and a player takes, on average, 100 shots per round, their handicap would be 28.

Trump famously mocked President Joe Biden during their June debate for claiming his handicap was down to a six during his time as vice president.

“I mean, it’s so low, honestly, I don’t like saying because people wouldn’t believe it,” Trump told Miller, “because I’m at an age where I should be losing it, and I haven’t… I believe I’m a better player than I was 25 years ago. Isn’t that crazy? And I just won the club championship in Palm Beach, where we have 21 scratch players. I won the seniors, and I played so well in seniors [that] I said, ‘Might as well play in the regular,’ and I beat kids that are very good players.”

Scratch players can regularly shoot under par — meaning they can actually keep up with the pros.

According to Trump, however, many of those scratch players back out of facing him in a tournament setting.

“You can’t do that easily,” he continued, “and a lot of people can’t play in club championships. I know guys in club championships, they can’t play. [When] you play with them, they’re scratch players. I say, ‘Are you gonna play in the club championship?’ ‘No, I’ll be away.’ What do you mean you’ll be away? ‘I’ll be away, sir. I’m making a trip. I can’t change it,’ because they can’t play. You understand that? Club championship is our major, and they can’t handle the pressure.”
