Chuck Todd Says Kamala Harris’s Media Strategy Will Backfire: ‘First Big Mistake’

NBC News chief political analyst Chuck Todd called out Vice President Kamala Harris’s media strategy as her campaign’s “first big mistake” ahead of her sit-down with CNN.

Harris’s campaign announced she and her running mate Tim Walz will be sitting for a joint interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on Thursday evening. It will mark the first major interview she’s given since moving to the top of the Democratic Party ticket. This, Todd argued, is a problem.

“Let me start with the first big mistake of the Harris campaign since she took over as the Democratic nominee. They have now raised the stakes for her first sit-down interview. More words and phrases will get scrutinized simply because the campaign and the candidate are behaving as if doing these interviews is about as interesting to them as visiting the dentist’s office,” Todd wrote for NBC News .

Someone Harris could learn from, Todd added, is former President Donald Trump .

“I know many Democrats have an allergy to all things Trump, but the one thing I thought more candidates would learn from his initial campaign in 2016 is that he viewed all media as good for him, whether he thought the interviewer was a friendly, a neutral, or an opponent,” Todd wrote.

Trump’s strategy of taking advantage of all kinds of media is what Harris should be doing, Todd argued, suggesting she take just one day a week to blast herself across cable news, podcasts, and more.

“Whether we like it or not, we live in a fragmented media environment, and that calls for fragmenting how a candidate reaches out,” Todd wrote. “It should be an all-of-the-above strategy.”
