Food Network star Sunny Anderson tore into former President Donald Trump during a “Cooking for Kamala” event, ripping his treatment of war heroes and veterans, and decrying his politics “deeply rooted in racism.”

Vice President Kamala Harris and her campaign recently announced they took in $540 million in the month after President Joe Biden dropped out — a record haul. They’ve had some help from groups with names like “ Swifties for Kamala ” and “ Comics for Kamala ” — and this week, “Cooking for Kamala” featured high-profile chefs and other celebrities in a virtual rally that raised over $200k.

In one segment hosted by Padma Lakshmi and Joel McHale , Anderson — a military veteran herself — opened up about her distaste for Trump and the long pattern of disrespect for military heroes that culminated in his Arlington Cemetary photo op. Anderson also expressed support for the rights of others and contrasted that with Trump’s brand of politics:

I wanted to just start by saying I come to this not only as a cook, but a United States Air Force veteran. And I grew up in a large military family. There’s something about the gravity of being the commander-in-chief. And I think a lot of people forget that the president is the commander-in-chief.

And as a veteran, I have heard, my fellow Americans that are veterans that gave their all, be maligned. I’ve heard prisoners of war being talked about in ways that they never should. And I think even this week, we can all see news where, gravesites were not treated with the reverence that they should be.

So it’s very important to me as a veteran, to be here. But I also wanted to talk about, growing up and growing up with parents that were just a generation away from, segregated schools and hearing the stories growing up about how my grandparents helped desegregate and were educators, etc.. It was, definite viewing in my family. The PBS documentary Eyes on the Prize. And there’s if you haven’t seen it, please watch it. They have updated it. If you have not seen this, and there’s something in the Eyes on the Prize that really struck me growing up as a kid.

I would ask my parents, you’d see all these people marching for Black people to get, you know, their rights, and but they weren’t all Black. And I remember asking my mom and dad about that, and they were like, yeah, it takes everybody. It’s it’s not just us that can fight for us. It’s all hands on deck.

And so I see everyone here and it’s truly all hands on deck. And I love that. I think that we’re all here because we want to be here. And we want to effect some change. And I think one of the small ways that we can do it, not just talking to the people that have decided, but having those kind of difficult conversations with others.

And something I’ve been kind of saying is, you know, you go into that booth, this is it’s your private vote. There is no peer pressure in that booth to vote how your heart, wants. And I think a lot of times we have to have those difficult conversations as well about policies that matter to us.

I’m always down for LGBTQI+, but I’m also down for women to have their choice. And I think a lot of people don’t realize, you know, when the other side is against women having their choice. But they also are deeply rooted in racism.

How would they feel if one of their children were taken advantage of by someone that they don’t like? And that child has to have that child? You know, these are the conversations we need to have to wake these people up and say, hi, you can like whatever you want, but there are certain times in history where you have to make a depart from the norm, and you have to say, this is a special occasion. This is a special moment.
