A Texas A&M student drilled a second-chance field goal on ESPN’s College Gameday Saturday morning and won $50,000 in the process ahead of his school’s primetime showdown against Notre Dame.

The show kicked off prior to a loaded slate of games Saturday in College Station, Texas, with the home team favored by -3.5 with Aggies coach Mike Elko prepared to put his team on the field for the first time after being hired in the offseason.

But before the seventh-ranked Irish and the 20th-ranked 20 Aggies faced off, a confident A&M freshman named Lucas took up ESPN host Pat McAfee on his $25,000 to make a 33-year field goal. Lucas missed on his first attempt after comedian Shane Gillis – a passionate Notre Dame fan – taunted him.

“I don’t know, Lucas seems, like, arrogant,” Gillis said. “I’m really hoping you fail.”

The freshman soccer player’s first kick had the trajectory to go through the uprights but it fell short and the student-athlete missed out on a large sum of cash. That didn’t sit well with a large crowd, which pressured McAfee to give Lucas another shot. He did.

Lucas got another shot from McAfee – this time for $50,000 – and he made another it with ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit holding the ball. The attempt was good for 33 yards but probably would have made it through at 40. The student walked away with a bag of cash, a celebration from Gillis , and 15 minutes of fame he will likely never forget.

Texas A&M will host Notre Dame on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ET with clear skies and during a day with near-triple-digit temperatures.

ESPN’s Lee Corso picked the Irish to win the game which – depending on who is asked – should either comfort or worry just about everyone in South Bend.
