‘Cringe’: Fox Hosts Accuse Kamala Harris Of ‘Changing Accent’ Because She Said ‘You Betta’ In Speech

Several Fox News hosts fixated on Vice President Kamala Harris’s use of the phrase “you betta,” accusing her of “changing” her “accent” and citing unnamed critics who called the usage “cringe.”

The vice president campaigned with President Joe Biden in Pittsburgh on Monday, but before that she spoke at a rally with union leaders and workers in Detroit.

In one portion of the speech, the VP employed a rhetorical flourish that included the use of the colloquial phrase “You betta!”:

Everywhere I go, I tell people, look, you may not be a union member. You better thank a union member!

For the five day work week! You betta thank a union member! For sick leave. You betta thank a union member! For paid leave! You betta thank your union member for vacation time! Because what we know is when union wages go up, everybody’s wages go up!

The phrase is short for “You had better.”

But at least three Fox News hosts brought up the exchange to accuse Harris of “changing” her “accent.”

On Tuesday morning’s edition of Fox News’ Fox & Friends First , co-anchors Carley Shimkus played the clip asked David Webb to comment on it:

CARLEY SHIMKUS: So, David, we want to ask you about this clip of Kamala Harris from yesterday. She’s making a speech in Detroit, and it’s getting a lot of attention because some people are accusing her of using an accent we’ve never heard her use before. Listen to this.

CARLEY SHIMKUS: So she made that exact same speech in Pennsylvania a few hours later and did not sound like that. So what do you think about this? Should we be focusing on it?

DAVID WEBB: Yeah. You know what? Focus on it to examine or to at least see the fakery. She was in Georgia a week ago, and suddenly she had a Georgia accent. She goes from one to the other. You know, I flew yesterday, Carley. As I crossed each state heading from New York back to Florida, my accent changed. I’m telling you, I had the Carolina accent minutes later, South Carolina. Then I was over Georgia. I mean, come on, I was going all over the place. I turned redneck at one point. I think I got that one in there, too.

Then on that morning’s edition of Fox & Friends , co-host Ainsley Earhardt haltingly objected:

AINSLEY EARHARDT: There she is in Detroit. She changed her accent when she was there in Detroit because she was speaking to — a group that, you know, has — that similar accent. And so she, she did the same.

Did the same speech in another town with a different accent.

[LAUGHTER]

And on Tuesday’s edition of Fox News Channel’s America’s Newsroom , co-host Dana Perino followed suit, citing unidentified critics who called the VP “cringe-worthy” and praising former President Donald Trump:

DANA PERINO: Vice President Kamala Harris was called out after her campaign event in Detroit yesterday for speaking with an accent that critics are panning as cringe worthy.

DANA PERINO: I mean, I don’t know, that crowd seem to like it!

BILL HEMMER: [MAKES FACE] Yep!

DANA PERINO: Now this happens. You think that Obama and Hillary Clinton is kind of — who does? Trump doesn’t really do this?

BILL HEMMER: No.

DANA PERINO: His his accent is New York no matter where he goes.

BILL HEMMER: He is who he is.

DANA PERINO: You’re right.
